It s been 4 years now since i built this chicken coop door and it s still going strong.
The door slides along a channel made by screwing a 1x4 on each side of the door then attaching another piece of 1x4 that s offset one inch from the first piece.
However it has to be attached to an existing door that is not heavier than 8lbs and installed at least 1 inch from the top of the coop door.
Allow 2 to 3 square feet per chicken for the coop and at least 4 square feet per chicken for the outside run.
There are two doors for this plan.
A commercial or diy automatic chicken coop door is installed to keep your chickens safe from predators at night and to make it easy to let the hens out in the morning.
When the door is closed it sits behind the board on the bottom to thwart raccoons and other small predators.
Put them together to make the overall design frame first.
The bigger door is for humans to go in and manage the coop and the little door with the slide is for your chicks to go out.
The height of the chicken coop door from the ground outside doesn t matter as long as chickens have a ramp to access doors that are 18 24 inches high.
This is slightly more difficult to build than the simple coop but it will allow your chickens more space as well as the option of being outside.
The problem with a simple pop door is that you have to lock and unlock it manually in the evening and at daylight.
